Alstom introduces X’trapolis 2.0 commuter train into service in Melbourne

Alstom has introduced the first X’trapolis 2.0 commuter train into passenger service in Melbourne, Australia, marking the initial deployment under an order of 25 trains by the Victorian Government.

The trains are manufactured locally at facilities in Dandenong and Ballarat, supporting regional production capability and supply chain integration.

Commuter train platform and capacity
The X’trapolis 2.0 is based on the Adessia commuter rail platform and is configured as a six-car electric multiple unit. Each train can carry up to 1,225 passengers and features a continuous walkthrough design to improve passenger flow.

Wider doors support faster boarding and alighting, contributing to reduced dwell times in high-frequency suburban operations.

Accessibility and passenger interface
The train incorporates multiple accessibility features, including 20 designated wheelchair spaces, areas for prams and bicycles, and semi-automated boarding ramps. Additional features include tactile signage, assistive hearing systems, and an updated interface between driver and passenger systems.

A total of 58 design modifications were implemented during development based on input from passengers, operators, and stakeholders to align the train with local operational requirements.

Energy efficiency and operational performance
The electric train design emphasizes energy-efficient operation through optimized traction systems and lightweight construction. These features support reduced energy consumption and improved operational reliability.

The new fleet is intended to replace older rolling stock, contributing to improved service consistency across the Melbourne rail network.

Local manufacturing and supply chain integration
The project includes a minimum 60% local content requirement, supporting domestic manufacturing and supply chain participation. Production activities involve multiple sites in Victoria, contributing to employment and industrial capability in the region.

The program supports approximately 750 jobs across manufacturing and associated supply chain activities.

Fleet expansion and deployment
The initial order covers 25 trains, with additional units planned for future delivery subject to further procurement. The rollout will occur progressively, with trains entering service over time as production continues.

Through this project, Alstom continues to supply suburban and regional rolling stock in Australia, supporting modernization of urban rail systems.
