Vossloh Supplies Concrete Sleepers for Victoria Rail Upgrade
Vossloh will manufacture and deliver 250,000 concrete sleepers for the Maroona–Portland line upgrade in Victoria, supporting higher axle loads and increased freight speeds.

Vossloh has been awarded a contract to supply 250,000 concrete sleepers for the modernization of the 170-kilometer railway line between Maroona and the Port of Portland in the Australian state of Victoria. The project supports the upgrade of a key freight corridor used primarily for grain exports and other bulk commodities.
Increasing Axle Load and Line Speed
The Maroona–Portland corridor currently operates under infrastructure-related restrictions. Maximum axle load is limited to 19 tonnes instead of the standard 23 tonnes typical for comparable Australian freight lines. In addition, train speeds are capped at 40 km/h rather than 80 km/h.
The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is upgrading the route to restore standard operating parameters. The replacement of degraded wooden sleepers with concrete sleepers is a central component of the programme. Concrete sleepers offer higher structural stability, improved load distribution, and extended service life compared with timber alternatives, particularly under heavy freight traffic.
Once completed, the line is expected to accommodate heavier and faster trains, increasing route capacity and reducing transit times. These changes are intended to enhance the competitiveness of rail freight and reduce reliance on road transport in western Victoria.
Manufacturing and Delivery Schedule
Under the contract, Vossloh will manufacture approximately 220,000 sleepers at its Wagga Wagga facility in New South Wales and a further 30,000 units at its Geelong plant in Victoria. Production is scheduled to commence in February, with completion planned for August 2027.
Concrete sleepers are engineered to maintain track geometry under higher axle loads and repeated dynamic stress. Their use supports improved track stability, reduced maintenance intervals, and enhanced operational reliability—key requirements for economically significant export corridors.
Strategic Importance for Freight Infrastructure
The Maroona–Portland line connects inland agricultural regions with a major export port. Upgrading the track structure enables higher payloads per train and increased operational efficiency, contributing to improved freight throughput.
By supplying standardized, high-durability concrete sleepers manufactured locally in Australia, Vossloh contributes to the structural reinforcement of a strategically important railway asset while supporting long-term freight productivity and network resilience.
